The U.S. International Trade Commission voted Wednesday to end tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on newsprint imported from Canada, with the decision receiving praise from the News Media Alliance.
The ITC concluded that imports of Canadian paper do not harm American producers, CNN reported. The vote to terminate the tariffs was unanimous and delivered a blow to the U.S. Department of Commerce, which upheld the tariffs earlier this month. https://cnnmon.ie/2ooMnwM
Newspaper publishers complained the tariffs were driving up the cost of newsprint and therefore hurting the industry financially. The News Media Alliance—which represents both newspapers and online media outlets—welcomed ITC's decision in a statement.
"Today is a great day for American journalism," News Media Alliance CEO David Chavern said. "The ITC's decision will help to preserve the vitality of local newspapers and prevent additional job losses in the printing and publishing sectors."
The association said the tariffs caused many newsrooms to lay off staff and reduce the number of editions they published. http://bit.ly/2wAT7vg
